MOTHER’S BONES
While sculpting this piece, I kept thinking about the phrase “children are flowers growing on their parents’ graves.”
A mother feeds her children with her own body. Parts of her become parts of them. I was thinking about what it means to be consumed by those you bring into the world, and how far this relationship extends beyond the human body.
The earth feeds us too. Its fertility comes from the decomposition of previous generations. We grow from their remains, carrying them in our bodies, before becoming nourishment ourselves.
Created in 2019, Mother’s Bones is one of the preparatory sculptures for the project Maybe Our Mother Didn’t Want Us.
White-glazed ceramic and silicone.
27 × 11 × 11 cm.
